St. Petersburg police said a man shot himself to death in front of four officers Saturday night.
About 10 p.m., police were called to the 3300 block of 32nd Avenue North after a resident reported seeing a man get out of a car holding what appeared to be a rifle, police said.
Four officers went to the scene and began to approach on foot a man sitting on the hood of a red Nissan holding what was later determined to be a shotgun. The man didn’t say anything to the officers, then fired the gun at his head, police said.
Police said it’s not clear the man saw the officers approaching him.
The man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No officers were injured.
No suicide note was found, but it appears the man, who was 34 years old, had been talking on a cell phone just prior to firing the gun, police said.
