A Tampa man died early Wednesday after his pickup rear-ended another vehicle, then caromed into a pole and brick wall at the Countryway community entrance, troopers said.
The three-vehicle crash occurred at 7:35 a.m. on westbound Hillsborough Avenue approaching Countryway Boulevard, troopers said.
William Lamar McElveen, 56, was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he died.
Troopers said McElveen was driving a 2001 Ford F-150 in the outside lane approaching Countryway. Two other vehicles ahead of him were stopped for the traffic signal at the intersection.
The F-150 collided with the rear of a 2002 Toyota Sequoia, forcing the Sequoia into the back of a 2003 Ford Expedition, the patrol said. After impact, the F-150 continued toward the northwest shoulder and struck a sign pole before hitting a brick wall, the patrol said.
The driver of the Sequoia, 46-year-old Gwendolyn F. Williamson, and the driver of the of the Expedition, 33-year-old Frank A. Frazier, both of Tampa, reported no injuries.
All three drivers were wearing seat belts, according the patrol.
