Man charged in road-rage shooting

A man was arrested today after shooting at a man the day before who had been in a road rage incident with his father, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

James Reynolds Jr, who turned 24 today, was charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle. James Reynolds Jr., of Plant City, and his attorney met with detectives at Orient Road Jail on Friday afternoon. He was taken into custody and charged, the sheriff’s office said.

On Thursday afternoon, James Reynolds Sr., 58, of Riverview, was in a blue van heading south on U.S. Highway 301. James Gritzinger, 22, of Riverview, was in a Chevrolet Tahoe also heading south on U.S. Highway 301.

James Reynolds Sr. tried to run Gritzinger off the road, the sheriff’s office said. Both men started yelling at each other from their vehicles.

They drove onto Rhodine Road. James Reynolds Sr. called his son, James Reynolds Jr., to tell him he was involved in an altercation and that they were heading east on Rhodine Road.

Both men then pulled over on Rhodine Road and got in a fight. When they stopped fighting, Gritzinger got back in his Chevrolet Tahoe and headed east on Rhodine Road.

When he reached the stop sign at Rhodine and Balm Riverview roads, Gritzinger saw a white van parked at the intersection with a man standing next to it holding a gun.

The man was James Reynolds Jr., who was waiting for Gritzinger, the sheriff’s office said.

James Reynolds Jr. walked towards Gritzinger’s Chevrolet Tahoe and pointed a laser-equipped handgun. He shot four times, striking the front passenger side door three times and the windshield one time, the sheriff’s office said.

Gritzinger drove off. He wasn’t injured.
