Man accused of stealing deodorant from Sarasota Publix
A 45-year-old man was caught after a short chase Wednesday when tried to take several cans of deodorant from a Publix in Sarasota, police said. About 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, workers at the Publix, 1044 N. Tamiami Trail, said Christopher Seiler, 45, put 10 cans of Axe deodorant in his pants and tried to leave the store, police said. A security guard confronted Seiler, who ran and jumped on a bicycle in an attempt to flee, police said. The bicycle’s chain broke and Seiler fell, losing most of the deodorant cans. The guard grabbed Seiler, who pushed guard, police said. The guard hit his head on ground, police said. Two people pulled Seiler away from the guard, and Seiler took off, police said.Seiler fled to an apartment at 1045 N. Cocoanut Ave., pursued by the guard, police said. Police arrived and Seiler was arrested. Seiler, who was indentified by Publix workers, admitted to officers that he took the deodorant, police said. The Publix guard was treated for minor injuries and released from Sarasota Memorial Hospital, police said. Seiler was charged with resisting a merchant, battery and petit theft. He was being held at the Sarasota County Jail with bail set at $2,000.
