Lakeland motorcyclist dies in crash

A 20-year-old Lakeland man was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a trailer carrying a boat this afternoon on U.S. 301 in Manatee County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

At 4:55 p.m., according to troopers, a 1985 Jeep CJS hauling a boat on a trailer and driven by Martin Hopkins, 64, of Ellenton was westbound on Sally Lee Drive/30th Avenue East near U.S. 301/State Road 43. Meanwhile, a 2006 Buell XB motorcycle driven by Adam Bookhamer was northbound on U.S. 301.

The Jeep started to turn left onto U.S. 301, entering the motorcycle’s path, troopers said. Bookhamer applied his brakes but couldn’t avoid the crash.

The motorcycle ended up under the trailer, troopers said. Bookhamer died at the scene.

Charges are pending, troopers said.
