A Hillsborough County inmate died after he was found hanging in his cell Wednesday night, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
A detention deputy at Orient Road Jail in Tampa found the inmate hanging from his cell door with a bedsheet tied around his neck, a sheriff’s office spokesman said.
The name of the inmate hasn’t been released because his family hasn’t been notified.
Just after 6 p.m., a jail video shows the inmate entering his cell alone, the sheriff’s office said. Fifteen minutes later the detention deputy saw the inmate sitting on his bed.
Just before 7 p.m., however, the detention deputy checked on the inmate again and found him unresponsive and hanging from the cell door.
CPR was performed on the inmate, who was transported to Tampa General Hospital where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.
The case remains under investigation.
