Hillsborough schools worker held in voyeurism case
TAMPA - A man who works for the Hillsborough County School District as an air conditioning mechanic has been charged with dozens of counts of video voyeurism. Dewey Norris, 51, was arrested by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The allegations stem from incidents that detectives say took place in his home in Mulberry, where detectives say he secretly recorded girls changing clothes in his bathroom. None of the charges appears to be connected to any Hillsborough schools students. Norris, who has worked with the school district since 1988, faces 49 counts of video voyeurism of a child under the age of 16 and four counts of video voyeurism of a child over 16.The victims in the case are 14, 15, 16 and 19 years old, sheriff’s detectives said. Norris is accused of placing a pen camera – a device that looks like a pen but has a camera hidden inside it – in his bathroom at his residence at 4787 Fox Creek Drive W. A friend of the suspect found the photos on his computer and alerted authorities. Norris admitted taking the photos, detectives said. The four victims said they were not aware they were being photographed. They also said they had not been sexually abused by Norris. District officials will send Norris a letter telling him he will be suspended with pay from his job, schools spokesman Stephen Hegarty said. The district has no reason to believe that any similar crimes occurred in any Hillsborough school, he added. Norris earns nearly $40,000 annually with his job in the air conditioning and energy management department.
