An 8-year-old girl was seriously injured when the family dog attacked her Friday at her Port Richey home, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office said.
The girl, who the sheriff’s office hasn’t identified, sustained severe lacerations to her face, eyes and nose. She may need some form of reconstructive surgery, the sheriff’s office said.
The attack occurred Friday afternoon in the family’s Port Richey home, 10801 Corinth St.
The family dog, a 90-pound adult chocolate Labrador retriever, has been acting aggressively toward children in the home, the sheriff’s office said.
The parents had placed the dog in the back room. When the girl went into the room to retrieve a toy, the dog attacked her, the sheriff’s office said.
The family heard screams and ran into the room to separate the dog from the girl, the sheriff’s office said.
The girl was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa.
The family voluntarily gave up the dog to Pasco County Animal Services, which will review the dog’s history.
