Five people hurt in I-4 rollover

Several occupants of a van were injured this afternoon after the vehicle overturned on Interstate 4, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

About 5 p.m., the 1998 GMC van was westbound in I-4 just east of U.S. Highway 27 in Polk County when it was cut off by another vehicle, FHP said. The driver of the van, Jose F. Hernandez, 48, of Tampa, tried to avoid a collision and overcorrected to the right, causing the van to spin and overturn.

Hernandez was not hurt, but two people in the vehicle were airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, and three others were taken to Heart of Florida Hospital. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The eight people in the van were laborers returning to Tampa, FHP said. The crash closed the westbound lanes for about an hour.

FHP is asking for help to locate the other vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to call (813) 631-4020 or *FHP.
