Wrong-way driver killed in crash on U.S. 301 in Manatee

The driver of a car died today after driving the wrong way on U.S. 301 in Manatee County, and colliding with a tractor-trailer. The crash left a Tampa truck driver hospitalized.

About 11:35 a.m. today, a 1999 Buick four-door driven by Julian D. Laney, 83, of Venice was headed southbound on U.S. 301 when it crossed the median at a break in the road at Fort Hamer Road, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Once it crossed the median, the Buick continued driving southbound in the northbound lane as it approached a curve, the sheriff’s office said.

Otniel Mojarrieta Medina, 49, of Tampa was northbound in a 1999 Mack tractor-trailer and tried to avoid the Buick, according to the sheriff’s office, but the vehicles collided.

Laney died at the scene. Medina is in serious condition at Blake Medical Center, the sheriff’s office said.

U.S. 301 was closed for about five hours to clean fuel and oils from the road, the sheriff’s office said.
