Tampa police have arrested a man who drove through the gate at MacDill Air Force Base Friday night.
Steven Daniel Coggins, 29, drove through the gate at the Bayshore entrance at about 9:45 p.m., triggering a base-wide gate lockdown, said Terry Montrose, spokesman for the 6th Air Mobility Wing.
The driver was “close to the gate and punched it,” Montrose said. The gate wasn’t damaged, Montrose said.
Coggins drove through the base to the Dale Mabry gate, where he found the lanes to exit the base were shut and the inbound lanes were blocked, so he drove near the northwest flight line where he hit an embankment, Montrose said.
Coggins ran on foot from the vehicle and was found by Tampa Police dogs, Montrose said. He was arrested off base grounds at about 10:40 p.m., police said.
Coggins was taken to the hospital. Charges were pending once he was medically cleared, police said. No information was released about his injuries.
The incident occurred the night before the base opened its doors to the public for AirFest, which began Saturday morning. The incident did not affect the show.
