The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a brazen armed robbery that netted diamonds and luxury watches from the International Diamond Center in Tampa.
Deputies say two men entered the store at 10330 N. Dale Mabry Highway Friday at about 4:50 p.m. where one of them, armed with a 9 mm handgun, ordered employees to the ground. Meanwhile, the other man used a mini sledgehammer to smash glass display cases before taking several Rolex watches and diamonds, deputies said.
Nobody was injured during the robbery, but the man with the gun did fire one shot before fleeing the business, deputies said. That bullet struck the ground and ricocheted through an office window.
That same suspect also took the wallet of one of the employees, deputies said. At approximately 6:03 p.m., a credit card from that wallet was used at a 7-11 gas pump at 12902 Newsome Road in Dover.
The first suspect, who fired the gun, was described as a black male, 5-foot-10, 240 pounds, in his mid-to-late 30s,wearing a black baseball cap, possibly with a Philadelphia Eagles logo, a green long-sleeve knit sweater, blue jeans and large sunglasses, deputies said. The second suspect was described as a Hispanic or light-skinned black male, 6-feet tall, 200 pounds, in his mid-to-late 30s, wearing a blue baseball cap, black hoodie with a large logo on the front, black pants and gloves.
Both suspects fled the scene in a black, older-model Volkswagen Jetta, deputies said.
