A warrant has been issued for a Tampa man who left a gun within reach of a 4-year-old boy who then shot his aunt while in a car.
Deputies say the incident occurred Monday around 5:40 p.m., while Randall Simmons, 22, the boy’s uncle, was seated in the back of a Ford Expedition with the boy, his aunt and an 8-year-old child in a parking lot at 9017 E. Adamo Drive.
Simmons showed the 4-year-old a .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun, deputies say, then put it in a small compartment that was within the children’s reach before going into a cellular telephone store.
Deputies say the boy retrieved the gun and it discharged, traveling through the front passenger seat and striking the boy’s aunt, 30-year-old Shantell Wilson, in her back.
As he returned to the vehicle with a cousin, 21-year-old Antonio Wilson, surveillance video shows the men walking away from the scene.
After deputies say Shantell Wilson and Deborah Rivers — the driver and the boy’s grandmother — were uncooperative during the investigation, a warrant was issued for Simmons’ arrest.
Shantell Wilson was treated at Tampa General Hospital and released the next day, deputies say.
Simmons is being charged with felony culpable negligence and with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Anyone with information on Simmons’ whereabouts, who wishes to remain anonymous or to be eligible for a cash reward, is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 873-TIPS or report online at the Crime Stoppers website, crimestopperstb.com.
