Deputies: Polk woman steals $187,000 from employer
A Lake Wales woman was arrested Thursday on fraud and grand theft charges after deputies said she embezzled nearly $187,000 from her employer. Marcy Scalise, 48, repeatedly defrauded Orange Industrial Services, of Davenport, by using the firm’s bank account debit card for personal use, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said. Scalise, an office manager, told deputies that for several years, she used a different company bank account to deposit funds from the main account to hide the theft. Bank records indicated Scalise used business funds to make purchases at Walmart, Publix and gas stations; to make payments to her personal credit-card accounts; to conduct multiple ATM cash withdrawals; to purchase high-end women's accessories and personal jewelry; and to pay for vacations. An audit showed Scalise had stolen $186,943.27 from 2011 to 2013. Scalise was arrested Thursday at her home without incident and released from the Polk County Jail after paying bail of $40,000.
