The shooting death of a man in Dade City remains under investigation by the Pasco Sheriff’s Office.
Colton Thomas Roberts, 25, and Jorge Ortega were arguing about 4:30 a.m. in front of Ortega’s home, 12041 Carmen Ave., deputies said.
During the dispute, Ortega shot Roberts, who died at the scene from his wounds, according to deputies.
Ortega was not arrested and has not been charged.
“He noticed somebody in his front yard and there became a verbal altercation,” Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco said. “During the altercation Mr. Ortega fired a round at Colton Roberts.”
Nocco said even after the initial shot fired, the argument between the men continued. Moments later, Roberts died at the scene. It was not clear how many shots were fired, Nocco said.
Roberts’ address in jail logs is listed as 37831 Clinton Ave. in Dade City, which is less than a half mile away from where he died.
Nocco said he is not sure if Roberts and Ortega knew each other.
Roberts had been arrested four times in the past seven months. In March, he was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle; He was arrested in July for violating a domestic violence injunction; Roberts was charged with burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, grand theft and possession of a controlled substance in September; His final arrest came Oct. 16 for armed trespassing.
