As a felon, Mark Cruz wasn’t allowed to possess the gun that accidently fell out of his pocket, discharged upon hitting the ground and sent a bullet through his leg, deputies said.
So after the 26-year-old was treated for his gunshot wound Monday at South Bay Hospital in Sun City Center, deputies took him to jail, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
The Wimauma resident was at an unknown address when the .22-caliber gun fired between 8 and 11 a.m., a sheriff’s office news release said.
Cruz was uncooperative with investigators while being treated at the hospital, saying only he unintentionally shot himself when his gun fell out of his pocket and he tossed the gun in an unnamed lake, deputies said.
Deputies said they eventually determined Cruz was a felon, therefore prohibited from owing or possessing a firearm.
Cruz, of 5524 Maggie St., was released from the hospital and taken to a Hillsborough County Jail on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed firearm and tampering or destroying physical evidence.
