Convicted fatal hit-and-run driver dies in crash

A Lakeland man waiting to be sentenced on charges stemming from a fatal hit-and-run crash died in another crash near Auburndale over the weekend.

Christopher John McCoy, 40, was driving west on Interstate 4 about 12:05 a.m. Sunday when the front of his 2013 Acura collided with the back of a 2013 Honda CRV being driven by David Godwin, 39, of St. Petersburg, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the SUV came to a stop without losing control. Its driver and passenger were not injured. Troopers Godwin and his passenger, 37-year-old Rosa Maxfield, were wearing their seat belts and not injured.

The Ledger reported that McCoy pleaded no contest this month to leaving the scene of a September 2013 crash where a pedestrian, 56-year-old Danny Ray Simons, of Lakeland, was hit and killed.

McCoy had been facing up to 30 years in prison at a July 10 sentencing.
