A sobriety checkpoint that stopped drivers near Clearwater High School on Friday night led to twelve arrests and numerous other citations, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.
Out of 1,324 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint at 540 S. Hercules Ave. between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., 378 were diverted so that the drivers could be assessed by deputies, the sheriff’s office said.
Those assessments led to twelve arrests for the following charges:
5 driving while license suspended or revoked
2 no valid driver’s license
2 possession of marijuana
1 possession of Xanax
1 possession of drug paraphernalia
1 providing false name to law enforcement
1 felony warrant
38 citations issued for numerous traffic infractions
A total of nine vehicles were impounded during the checkpoint, deputies said.
Deputies said that the checkpoint was dedicated to Robert Lemon, 25, and Hilary Michalak, 27, who died as a result of an alcohol-related crash on the Memorial Causeway in Clearwater last Labor Day when they were struck while riding a tandem bicycle.
