Auto burglaries problem in St. Petersburg this summer

St. Petersburg Police said there were more than 20 auto burglaries during the weekend.

Residents should keep car doors locked because all of the burglaries occurred in unlocked vehicles, police said.

Three different groups of youths, all of whom are walking or riding bicycles, committed the offenses, police said. One group robbed 6 cars, while another robbed 11 cars, police said.

St. Petersburg police said theft from automobiles has been a problem throughout the summer. During July, police made 71 arrests for auto burglaries, the department said. Most of those arrested are youths who go from car to car looking for an unlocked door, police said.
