Another power outage caused by squirrel, TECO says

A squirrel again is getting the blame for a power outage in Tampa.

A Twitter post from Tampa Electric on Thursday night said “a squirrel in the substation” caused an outage to about 3,500 customers in the area of George Road and Hillsborough Avenue about 6 p.m. The outage lasted less than an hour.

Squirrels have been to blame for several area power outages, including two incidents on the University of South Florida campus on Dec. 4 and 5. The most infamous squirrel-related outage incident happened in February 2013, which knocked out electricity to the David L. Tippin Water Treatment Facility and led to a boil water notice for most Tampa water customers.
