FHP: Driver arrested in fatal 2012 DUI crash

A 23-year-old Apollo Beach man was arrested in Texas on Thursday and charged in a fatal crash that occurred in 2012 in Wimauma.

Daniel Luckett was charged with DUI manslaughter and arrested by U.S. Marshals in Brownwood, Texas, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

On November 1, 2012, Luckett was driving a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta west on State Road 674 just east of Chert Rock Trail in Wimauma. Luckett was traveling with front-seat passenger Joshua Lewandowski, 22, of Ruskin.

Luckett was driving too fast and failed to negotiate a curve that veered to the right, entering into the eastbound lane and crashing into a tree on the south shoulder of the road, FHP said.

Luckett and Lewandowski were taken to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries, and on Nov. 30, 2012, Lewandowski died from his injuries, FHP said.

At the time of the crash, Luckett was under the influence of alcohol and his blood-alcohol content was recorded at 0.18, FHP said. In Florida, a person is considered to be driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol content of 0.08.

In August 2013, a warrant for Luckett’s arrest was issued. He was located in Texas on Thursday.
