An SUV attempting to pass a vehicle on U.S. 301 did not make it back into its lane before striking an approaching car and killing its driver Monday in Thonotosassa, deputies said.
Yadiel Calderon-Pizarro, 22, of Tampa, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
At 9:48 a.m., Rodney L. Manwaring, 49, was southbound in a 2011 Chevrolet HHR, attempting to pass a vehicle on the two-lane highway near Stacy Road, deputies said.
Manwaring was unable to re-enter the southbound lane before striking the left front of a northbound 2003 Honda Civic driven by Calderon-Pizarro, deputies said.
After impact, the Honda rotated and collided with a guard rail before stopping, deputies said.
Calderon-Pizarro was not wearing a seat belt, a sheriff’s office report said.
Manwaring’s sport utility vehicle ended up on the southbound outside shoulder.
Manwaring, of Oswego, N.Y., was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with minor injuries, the report said.
Charges are pending, the report said.
U.S. 301 was closed for a time because of the investigation and landing of the emergency helicopter, the sheriff’s office said.
