Mom accused of burying guns after fatal teen shooting declines plea deal

TAMPA — The Valrico mother accused of hiding the guns after her teenage son shot and killed another boy in their garage told a judge Tuesday that she wants a trial, not a plea deal.

Heidi Quinn rejected offers of probation and gun safety school. Her trial on two counts of tampering with evidence starts Monday. If a jury finds her guilty, she could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Quinn, 51, was arrested in April, three months after her son, Cody, shot and killed 17-year-old Jayquon Johnson in their garage.

Johnson, a Brandon High School basketball player, had gone to the home with another boy to buy marijuana from Cody Quinn, according to a Hillsborough sheriff's report.

Cody Quinn later told investigators that he shot Johnson in self-defense.

Heidi Quinn heard the shot and came into the garage, where she found her son standing over the mortally wounded Johnson, authorities said. She collected both teens' guns, ran to the backyard and began to bury them, according to the report. Then, she stopped, unearthed the guns, and brought them back into the garage.

The Hillsborough State Attorney's Office declined to bring a homicide charge against Cody Quinn, finding no evidence to refute his claim of self-defense. They did, however, charge him with multiple drug offenses.
