County commission won't pay former administrator's legal fees
TAMPA - Hillsborough County commissioners have changed their minds and now refuse to pay former County Administrator Pat Bean's criminal defense fees. Commissioners voted 7-0 Wednesday to rescind their May 4 vote to reimburse legal fees Bean incurred during a 15-month investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Investigators said they turned up no evidence Bean violated the law when she gave herself a 1 percent pay raise without commission approval. The vote was taken after commissioners met with their outside attorney, Richard McCrea, in executive session. McCrea had previously recommended the board pay Bean's legal fees but said Wednesday he had found "legitimate issues" as to the legality of reimbursing Bean. Bean has sued the commission for not paying her full severance pay after she was fired in June 2010. The lawsuit is set to for trial Dec. 29. Commissioners could not comment because of the ongoing litigation.
