Newsroom staff members at TBO.com, The Tampa Tribune and Centro Tampa received 12 awards during the Florida Society of News Editors’ annual convention on Thursday.
“I’m extremely proud of these dedicated professionals,” Managing Editor Ken Koehn said. “They deliver first-rate coverage for our readers, and it’s gratifying to see them recognized by their peers.”
TBO.com received a first-place award for online breaking news. The effort included TBO staff members, reporter José Patiño, former staff writer Ray Reyes and photographer Chris Urso. TBO.com also won first place for an online slide show and second place in the video category.
The Tribune competed in the category that includes Florida newspapers with circulations larger than 125,000.
Howard Altman, military reporter for the Tribune, won first place in the community leadership category with his series Special Operations: Afghanistan and Beyond. Altman traveled to Afghanistan to report on the Tampa Bay area’s deep connections with the military effort there.
First-place awards also went to David Williams for sports page design, Luke Johnson for spot news photography and former staff member Michelle Bearden for column writing.
Second-place honors went to Joey Johnston for sports reporting and Andy Jones for spot news photography.
Former staff member Michael Sasso won third place for business reporting.
Centro Tampa staff members took awards in the Spanish language division. Joel Bustamante won second place for design, and Juan Carlos Chavez won third place for sports writing.
