TAMPA — And the winner is… Estuary.
The naturalistic design evocative of a river delta will grace the support piers of the 1.9-mile extension of the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority announced today.
Out of 1,805 votes in a public opinion poll, 74 percent went for Estuary while just 26 percent favored the simpler design called Vivid.
"While both pier designs were outstanding options, (the authority) is confident the Estuary design will not only enhance the Selmon Extension project but will serve as a new landmark for the Tampa Bay region," said Joe Waggoner, the authority's CEO.
Construction recently began on the extension from South Dale Mabry Highway to the Tampa end of the Gandy Bridge. Completion is set for late 2020.
