HART ridership increases again
TAMPA - HART bus ridership increased 1.7 percent in April compared with year-ago figures to 1.2 million passengers, the 27th consecutive month ridership has increased. Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority officials have attributed ridership increases to rising gas prices pushing motorists toward alternative ways to get to work and a better understanding of transit options. Bus ridership is up 6.4 percent, or an increase of 508,102 trips from the beginning of the fiscal year in October through April, compared with the same period last year. Bus ridership for fiscal year 2012 is on track to surpass 14 million, the highest in HART history, spokeswoman Marcia Mejia said. In fiscal year 2011 it was 13.7 million, a HART record.Ridership on express routes in April 2012 was 29,019, or a 14.6percent increase compared with April 2011, Mejia said. Year-to-date ridership on express routes is up 16.7 percent.
