The sentiment was genuine, even if the ribbing was sharp, as Steve Otto accepted a proclamation today from Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn on Friday in the newsroom of The Tampa Tribune.
The occasion was Otto’s semi-retirement from 45 years as a newspaper columnist whose targets have included four decades of Tampa mayors. Otto will continue writing for the Tribune, just less frequently.
“We’ve got something for you,” Buckhorn declared as he presented the “Steve Otto Day” proclamation.
“A parking ticket?” Otto shot back.
“You’ve kept me honest,” Buckhorn later acknowledged. “You’ve kept me grounded. At times you’ve kept me unemployed — and unelected.”
As the laughter died down, Buckhorn concluded, “We are a better city because of Steve.”
