A Tampa man is facing charges for stealing personal identifying information from the Haley Tampa VA Hospital.
Willie Streater, 24, is charged with five counts of wrongful disclosure of health information, two counts of access device fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft, US Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III said.
Streater worked for a shredding company that had a contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs to destroy documents at the hospital, the United States Attorney’s Office said.
The office said Streater instead stole documents that contained veterans’ personal identifying information.
The government is seeking $1,146,745.35 from Streater, the US Attorney’s Office said. That’s the amount of money the office says was stolen.
Streater sold the documents to people who filed fraudulent tax returns to steal tax refunds, the office said.
The investigation lasted three years and involved the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Office of Inspector General, the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation and the Tampa Police Department.
