Tampa house fire started by child playing with lighter
A Tampa family escaped uninjured but their home was heavily damaged Friday evening after a fire that apparently began by a child playing with a lighter.
Thirty-two firefighters responded to the fire call at 1925 East Crenshaw shortly before 7 p.m. They had the fire under control in about 20 minutes.
Tampa Fire Rescue reported three children and a woman were in the home when the fire started. The woman was taking a shower and saw the smoke and flames when she got out.
Fire investigators questioned the children and found out one had been playing with a lighter while the woman was in the shower.
Five people lived in the home – a woman who also lives there was not home at the time of the fire. The American Red Cross will help the family with housing.
No damage estimate was available late Friday.
