Elderly driver dies, two hurt in Hernando crash
An elderly driver died and her passenger suffered critical injuries after she drove into the path of another car in Hernando County. About 10:16 p.m. Tuesday, Ellen G. LaPorta, 79, of Brooksville, was northbound on Medical Center Drive in a 2013 Hyundai Elantra after a stop sign heading onto State Road 50 (Cortez Boulevard), according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Skye Evelyn Amato, 17, was eastbound in a 1992 Buick Regal on S.R. 50 in the inside lane approaching Medical Center Drive when LaPorta drove into her path, FHP said. Amato's car hit the Hyundai, sending both vehicles spinning. Ellen LaPorta later died of her injuries at Brooksville Regional Hospital and her passenger, Bernard LaPorta, 85, suffered critical injuries, according to FHP. Amato of Brooksville suffered minor injuries.
