The Florida Highway Patrol has identified a driver killed in a wrong way crash early Friday morning.
Edward Jose Duran, 23, died at the scene, the patrol said. Duran, from Tampa, was driving a 1997 Honda Accord north in a southbound lane struck an ambulance head-on just north of downtown Tampa around 2:45 a.m., investigators said.
It’s the third time this year a driver traveling the wrong way on Interstate 275 in Tampa was involved in a fatal crash.
Troopers suspect Duran had been drinking or taking drugs. If that’s true, all three of the wrong way crashed involved drugs or alcohol, according to the highway patrol.
The ambulance’s driver Tarel Omar Peralta, of Wesley Chapel, and fellow emergency technician Kemecia Tasha Gaye Smith, of Lutz, both 24, were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital with minor injuries.
