Two Hillsborough County deputies were seriously injured this morning when they were struck by a motorcyclist during a traffic stop that closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 just north of Sun City Center.
The southbound lanes were reopened around 11:15 a.m., according to deputies.
The crash occurred at mile marker 24 in Ruskin just after 8 a.m.
Deputies say Capt. Steve Launikitis stopped motorcyclist Bryan Martinez, of Valrico, southbound on I-75 just north of the Sun City exit, and Master Deputy Chris Davis joined him for assistance.
Both deputies were standing on the grass shoulder, speaking with Martinez, on the west shoulder when Bryan Edmonston, 27, of Kissimmee, drove his motorcycle into the right emergency lane and struck Martinez’s motorcycle along with the two deputies.
The deputies were airlifted to Tampa General Hospital and will be hospitalized for several days, deputies say.
Launikitis suffered a broken leg and possible hip fracture, and Davis was diagnosed with a broken leg and dislocated shoulder.
Martinez avoided injury when the deputies alerted him to move out of the way, deputies say.
Edmonston, who was not wearing a helmet, was hospitalized with a non-life threatening head injury, deputies say.
Edmonston has not been charged pending toxicology reports and completion of the crash investigation.
