Two passengers in a van that overturned Sunday on Interstate 75 in Sarasota died, while another is in critical condition, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Johniece F. Diaz, 28 of Cape Coral, was driving a 1994 Dodge Ram van north on I-75 near mile marker 194 with seven passengers. At 9:37 a.m., the rear, left tire of the van blew out causing Diaz to lose control, according to troopers.
The van, which was traveling in the left lane, veered across the center and right lanes and overturned. The vehicle came to rest on the east shoulder of the interstate, facing east.
Two of the passengers, whose identities have not been released, died. They were wearing seat belts. A third person, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Bradenton's Blake Medical Center in critical condition. The person's name was not released.
Two other passengers were taken to Doctors Hospital of Sarasota, while another was taken to Venice Regional Medical Center. They each were in serious condition, according to FHP.
Another passenger, Jami Curran, 31, also of Cape Coral, was taken to Venice Regional Medical Center in serious condition. Diaz, also in serious condition, was taken to Blake Medical Center.
