Driver reaching for drink blamed in truck collision on I-75, FHP says

TAMPA — A driver reaching for a drink caused a collision Wednesday morning between a concrete pump truck and a semitrailer truck on Interstate 75 near the I-4 junction, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Michael White, 33, of Zephyrhills, driver of the pump truck, was trapped inside and had to be extricated before he was airlifted to a hospital, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue. The other driver, Ismael Roman, 65, of Dade City, was not injured.

The collision occurred about 6 a.m.

White was driving south on I-75 in the center lane when he was distracted by reaching down for a drink, FHP said.

He struck the rear of Roman’s semitrailer truck and both vehicles came to rest in the outside lane.

The crash slowed interstate traffic for about two hours.
