Walter S. Yates Elementary School 1954 and 2013
Walter S. Yates Elementary School was built in 1954 and opened with 535 students as the first elementary school in growing Brandon. Designed by architects Frank McLane and Robert Wielage, it is located on South Kingsway Road. Yates is on 15 acres just south of the CSX railroad tracks and now serves 800-plus students. The campus has grown from 15 rooms in seven buildings to 11 buildings, housing students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. These picnic tables sit where the grand oak once stood. Principal Richard Shields said the tree split and fell in 2010.
