Pregnancy Center walks to buy ultrasound unit
PLANT CITY -
The Pregnancy Care Center’s April 6 Walk For Life has taken on a special significance.
The nonprofit is hoping to raise $20,000 this year, enough to help buy a new ultrasound machine. That’s double the usual amount raised by the annual fundraiser.
Early indications are that the center will meet that goal, Executive Director Darlene Davis said.
“We’re already well on our way,” she said.
She hopes at least 200 people will take part and raise money for the cause through pledges for each lap walked.
Registration is at 9:30 a.m. at City Hall, 302 W. Reynolds St., with the walk starting at 10 a.m. on roads in the area around the building. The theme of this year’s walk is “Love Life Walk For It.”
Demand has never been greater since the center renovated and expanded its building at 304 N. Collins St. last summer, Davis said. But the center’s ultrasound machine is breaking down and needs to be replaced, she said.
A new ultrasound with a five-year warranty will cost about $40,000, and the local Knights of Columbus will match the money raised by the April 6 walk. Davis is hoping the center can raise its share with the walk.
The faith-based nonprofit agency offers pregnancy tests, counseling for unwed mothers, parenting classes and other services.
