Lithia retreat to help inspire writers
LITHIA - A one-day retreat for people who aspire to inspire through their writing, the Florida Inspirational Writers Retreat, will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Cedarkirk Retreat & Conference Center, 1920 Streetman Drive. Informative talks, great food, fellowship and encouragement were the highlights of the retreat in past years, said previous attendee Bette Lafferty. Speakers will include authors and retreat co-directors Debora Coty and Ruth Carmichael Ellinger; author and keynote address speaker Cheri Cowell of Orlando; Timothy Lowry of the publishing company Ambassador International; Kat Heckenbach of Valrico, author of the young-adult fantasy series "Finding Angel" and "Seeing Unseen,"; and Kim Moore, author of "Now That's Romantic! Intimate Themed Dinners for Romantic Special Occasions." They will give tips on formulating queries, working with traditional publishers and self-publishing, preparing manuscripts, writing for teens and young adults, creating realistic fictional characters and introducing humor into writing.Lunch and snacks will be provided, and there will be door prizes and a writing contest. Preceding the retreat will be an evening networking and critiquing session from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 27 at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church Family Center Building, Room 209, 3315 Bryan Road, Brandon. Attendees may bring 20 copies of two pages of a manuscript, 500 words or less, and receive comments from a panel of professional writers. The cost of the retreat is $115; deadline is Sept. 13. Early registration, on or before Aug. 31, is $95. There is a bring-a-friend discount: Each Brandon Christian Writers member may bring a non-member guest, and each pays $75.
