Tending the land at Sickles
We are teachers at Sickles High School. This year we had the privilege of being selected for a Mosaic Foundation gardening grant through the University of Florida Agriculture Department. This was a complete honor for us, as we teach special education. We were the only class at our school that was selected, even though several clubs had applied. Our students worked very hard on our garden. We also had a hydroponic system donated to us. We are growing strawberries in hope of being able to raise money for next year. With the grant we also were required to take a test and read books about Florida’s history of farming. This was very involved. We are very proud of our students in what they learned about healthy eating habits and where their food comes from.Coach Pat O’Brien and Sarann Verleni ESE Department, Sickles High School
