Save the Belleview Biltmore

Regarding “Iconic hotel may be razed” (Aug. 18):

I was saddened to read about the possibility of the Belleview Biltmore in Belleair being destroyed. Henry Plant had such an influence around our area and other places throughout Florida. After he had the Tampa Bay Hotel built in the 1890s, decades later it too sat empty and was deteriorating. With restoration, this beautiful facility is now known as Plant Hall at the University of Tampa.

The Floridan, yet another hotel in downtown Tampa, which was built in the 1920s, also sat empty and had greatly deteriorated decades later. Thankfully, someone who had a passion for the historical building restored it, and life returned to it again last year.

If this historical Belleview Biltmore structure cannot be preserved and utilized as a hotel, perhaps it could be changed to a private school or other such facility. The building needs attention soon, nearby property owners need a resolution soon and hopefully there is someone in our area who will come forth with the financial means to restore this beautiful and historical building.
