Little hope for peace

I was deeply moved by the photo of chanting Palestinian children that accompanied the article on Ariel Sharon’s death on Sunday (“Israel’s controversial, iron-willed former leader dies at 85,” Nation & World). One is reminded of the lyrics from the musical “South Pacific”:

“You’ve got to be carefully taught before it’s too late,

Before you are six or seven or eight,

To hate all the people your relatives hate,

You’ve got to be carefully taught!”

I see little hope for a peaceful resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflicts as long as each new generation is “carefully taught.”
