As our legislative body tries to achieve yet another budget compromise before the impending January deadline, it is troubling to read that once again Social Security benefits appear to be on the chopping block. Have they forgotten that when FDR established Social Security it was basically an employee-paid pension plan? The amount of one’s Social Security check is determined by the amount of money one has put into the plan during their employed lifetime. So, why then is Social Security included in the list of “entitlements?”
Do we need a balanced budget? Do we need to pay down our debt? Do we need to cut the size of the government? Yes, but not at the expense of the Social Security recipients. Have you noticed how many older people are Wal-Mart greeters, fast food employees and baggers at your local grocery store? Why? Because they cannot live on the Social Security check they receive. Let’s eliminate the entitlement programs created by LBJ but leave the elderly alone.
