As a friend and admirer of Joe Lala, I want to personally thank The Tampa Tribune for the excellent article about a real Tampa Banana success story (“Ybor drummer was rock legend,” front page, March 19).
Joe was as natural in his surroundings around Ybor City and West Tampa as he was on the stage or in front of the camera. His devotion to his mother was unparalleled. I will think of Joe every time I hear the old Todd Rundgren song with these words:
Ever since I was a tiny boy
I don’t want no candy
I don’t need no toy
I took a stick and an old coffee can
I bang on that thing ’til I got
Blisters on my hand.
Bang on the drum all day from heaven my friend — we are listening!
