Ruskin mother’s soldier son rests in hallowed ground

Army Sgt. 1st Class Matthew I. Leggett was interred Wednesday at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

Leggett died Aug. 20 in Kabul, Afghanistan, of injuries received in combat, according to the Defense Department.

Leggett enlisted in the Army in May 1995 and had been based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, since 2012. He served three combat tours and was the recipient of numerous awards and decorations, including a Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster and a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat. He was assigned to headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, XVIII Airborne Corps.

His mother, Thea Marie Kurtz, lives in Ruskin.
