MacDill's security increased indefinitely after bin Laden's death

TAMPA - Increased security at MacDill Air Force Base, implemented today after the death of Osama bin Laden, will be indefinite, according to Capt. Regina Gillis, spokeswoman for the 6th Air Mobility Wing, which oversees operations at the base. The security measures were ordered by U.S. Northern Command, said Gillis, which is responsible for "setting baseline force protection conditions for military installations in the United States." Security at the base and all other U.S. military installations is at Force Protection Condition Bravo. That means increased security at gates and other procedures, said Capt. Angela Young, a Northcom spokeswoman. Neither Young nor Gillis would offer more specifics, citing security concerns.
However, Gillis did offer a glimpse of what the various force protection conditions entail. The following is a brief description of each Force Protection Condition, or FPCON: FPCON NORMAL: Applies when a general global threat of possible terrorist activity exists and warrants a routine security posture. At a minimum, access control will be conducted at all military installations and facilities. FPCON ALPHA: Applies when there is an increased general threat of possible terrorist activity against personnel or facilities, the nature and extent of which are unpredictable. The increased measures during FPCON Alpha must be capable of being maintained indefinitely. FPCON BRAVO: Applies when an increased or more predictable threat of terrorist activity exists. Sustaining FPCON Bravo measures for a prolonged period may affect operational capability and military-civil relationships with local authorities. FPCON CHARLIE: Applies when an incident occurs or intelligence is received indicating that some form of terrorist action or targeting against personnel or facilities is likely. Prolonged implementation may create hardship and affect the activities of the unit and its personnel. FPCON DELTA: Applies in the immediate area where a terrorist attack has occurred or when intelligence has been received that terrorist action against a specific location or person is imminent. FPCON Delta is usually declared as a localized condition and is not intended to be sustained for an extended duration. MacDill is the home of U.S. Central Command, which runs military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and U.S. Special Operations Command. The al-Qaida leader, considered the mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks that killed thousands of Americans, was slain early Monday in Pakistan in a firefight with U.S. forces, ending a decade-long manhunt.
