Afghanistan veteran presented with Tampa ‘smart home’

A pair of foundations and a number of donors have teamed up to present a new house to a Tampa veteran who lost both legs and his left arm in Afghanistan.

Marine Corps Sgt. Michael Nicholson, who was injured by an improvised explosive device in 2011 at age 22, was presented Thursday with a new custom-designed “smart home” at 6321 Interbay Ave. in South Tampa.

Building for America’s Bravest, a joint program of the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation — along with other donors — presented the house to Nicholson.

The house features a host of appliances that ease down to wheelchair level and other enhancements to help Nicholson navigate through a house designed for accessibility.
