Free planetarium shows on Friday nights

St. Petersburg College is a great community education resource and now, a great resource for free family entertainment.

The college is home to a planetarium “star theater” with a 24-foot domed ceiling that can accurately simulate the night sky at any time or location on Earth. Free shows are held every Friday at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. when college is in session.

The facility also includes a rooftop observatory with a 20-inch reflecting telescope that is open to the public after the planetarium shows.

The three-story observation deck has numerous portable high-powered telescopes and telescopes equipped with solar filters allow daytime visitors to safely view sunspots and other solar activity.

The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Natural Science Building (SC 205) on the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus, 6605 Fifth Ave. N., St. Petersburg. Free parking is available for the celestial shows.

Shows on the calendar include all of June's Fridays and several in July. For more information, visit the St. Petersburg College website.
