The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is sponsoring a free freshwater fishing derby for families this weekend at Tenoroc Fish Management Area in Lakeland.
No fishing license will be required, but derby participants must register in advance for the 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, April 5 event. Registrations will be accepted by calling (863)-648-3200 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., through Friday (April 4). e $3 daily use fee for Tenoroc will also be waived for participants.
Derby Lake is stocked with catfish and the special event site. The lake has three fishing piers and a 200-foot handicapped accessible boardwalk.
Free bait will be provided to kids ages 15 and younger and a limited number of loaner rods and reels will be available. Older anglers must supply their own bait and tackle.
There will be a casting contest and a free lunch, courtesy of Publix.
Parents or guardians must accompany children.
