The pitch: “Breathable, quick drying shield acts like a surgical mask for your toothbrush.”
The skinny: I am not a germaphobe by any stretch. Still, when you edit a health section every week, you learn things. And one of those things is that some nasty stuff can collect on a toothbrush between uses.
We’re lucky — the toothbrushes in our bathrooms are pretty far from the toilets. In our master, it’s separated by a pocket door. But who knows what flies around when we wash our hands, sneeze, etc.?
If I’d seen the IntelliDent Toothbrush Shield advertised a few years ago, I probably would have laughed. Not anymore. I grabbed at the chance to sample a 10-pack.
They’re a breeze to use — you simply slip the shield over the top of your brush like a little hood. Because the covers are made from a non-woven, breathable material that wicks away moisture from your brush, the bristles dry quickly. And you can use one shield for about seven days. (They come individually wrapped in a sealed package that’s a little tough to peel open.)
But the true beauty of these shields is when you travel. They take up far less room in your bag than a plastic case — and your brush won’t be wet all the time. They’d also be great for taking your toothbrush to the gym or to work.
IntelliDent says the shield was tested by Nelson Laboratories and was found to be “99.9 percent effective in reducing bacterial and viral transfer from both airborne and surface microbial contact.”
Works for me.
