Some exempt from insurance, penalties

On Jan. 1, most Americans are required to have health insurance. Uninsured individuals are exempt from the law and subsequent financial penalties if they:

Cite a religious objection to the requirement

Are a member of one of the following groups: Native American tribes, undocumented immigrants, prison inmates or a health-care sharing ministry

Are uninsured for less than three months of the year, such as someone between jobs

Make an income low enough that health coverage is considered unaffordable or low enough they don’t file federal income taxes

Would qualify for the expanded Medicaid program for poor Americans, but the state where they live isn’t broadening its requirements (Florida is one of 16 such states)
